General Homework 6-8

Stephen King, in his nonfiction book, On Writing, believes that "large numbers of people have at least some talent as writers and story-tellers, and that those talents can be strengthened and sharpened." Let's start sharpening...

Join the journey into writing. Learn through writing how to write. Excellent writers share ideas, choose excellent words, compose with style, and organize for clarity.

But first, they need a topic. Choose anything that interests you for your one hour writing homework (see below): rodeo, skateboards, horses, beading, insects, sports. Learn about it. Write about it. Write in details to show you care about it and know it. Include writing skills we learn in class.

Want some topic ideas? Go to World Wonders to discover something in the world that interests you: science, biographies, cartoons. Again: Learn about it. Write about it. Write in details to show you care about it and know it. Include writing skills we learn in class. Write a Weekly Paper (one week to research; one week to write), due the 1st and 15th. Or complete a MOTT project.

Ready! Set! Go!

We know these things: brainstorming; prewriting for topic ideas and strong verbs; drafting strong verb paragraphs; drafting introductions and conclusions.

Homework (Fifth Grade) :

If you do not complete a Weekly Paper, then write for one hour over the weekend:

Spend one hour writing between Thursday and Monday; turn in writing on Monday morning. Write clearly with strong verbs and nifty nouns. Write in paragraphs. Use what we are learning in class. You may complete this during the week during any timeframe you choose (such as 1 hour at a time, or four fifteen minute sections). Just spend one hour writing during the week and turn your writing in on Monday during class time.

SPELLING

Current procedures: See the Spelling Homework Page.

Old procedures:

Due Every Tuesday: Choose five (5) words you need to learn to spell.

Tuesday or Wednesday: Follow the procedure for practicing your spelling words.

Due Every Thursday: Ready for spelling test with practiced words.

Understanding Paragraphs

To be a better writer, write! Our goal is to write excellent paragraphs with as many details as needed to clearly explain to your reader exactly what you mean. Strong verbs add clarity, precision, and action to your writing. Download the power point presentation on Review of Paragraphs for your review; it includes an outline for our paragraphs, just as we practiced in class. Students in grade five have yet to review these expectations this year.
