Welcome to Ms. Edwards's Language Arts

"It's never too late to be what you might have been."

George Eliot

What might you become? What is important to you? One way to discover these is to write. Writing clarifies thinking, so writing is thinking. Duane Alan Hahn says, " I write to teach myself what I already know."

My goal is to help you develop your thinking about ideas and writing so that your writing, wherever it is (school, home, work, WASL), will be the best you can compose at the time.

Welcome, and remember what Mark Twain said, "The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug." Think about that , and come to class prepared to think and write!

This Site

Writers need resources, and this site is a resource for you. Check out the menu bar at the top. NSD is the Nespelem School home page. LA is this page. Writing Process explains the process that writers engage in to compose thoughtful pieces--to inform, to entertain, to persuade, for reflection, or to tell a story. Six Traits includes the characteristics of excellent writing. Writers focus on them because the traits are the guts of writing. In fact, they are so important that the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), the Grade Level Expectations (GLEs), and our curriculum are based on them. Therefore, the next tab explains the WASL scoring (COS/CON) in six trait terms. Next, the Products tab will eventually take us to samples of our work. World Wonders will provide you with many ideas and choices for writing topics. Of course, the resources page takes you to tools and references you may need (dictionaries, samples, other lessons, etc.). These links will continue on every page so you can refer to them often.

On the right, more links take you to lessons and resources for your class. The top section leads directly to the home page of your class. The rest of the page includes links for you, teachers, and family.

Click through all the links to get an idea of the layout. Let me know if there are any items you think should be included.

You'll have all the resources you need in class and on this site. Just bring your smile and your ideas.
