Reading Assessment by Reading Words - Decoding

The San Diego Quick Assessment

* A Rough Estimate of reading grade level.

Each box represents a grade level. If a child misses no more than one of the ten words in the box, that is the child's independent reading level. Two errors suggest his/her instructional level. Three or more errors indicate the frustration level.

Explain to child, "Try to read out loud each word in each box in order. I will listen to write down your mispronunciations to show you which parts of the word you already know after the test. I will also help you with the parts you didn't know."

Some teachers recommend continuing the test until the child misses three words in a box.
