World Wonders Weekly Writing

The Weekly Writing Guidelines: Grades 5

Overview

Stephen King, in his nonfiction book, On Writing, believes that "large numbers of people have at least some talent as writers and story-tellers, and that those talents can be strengthened and sharpened." Let's start sharpening...

Join the journey into writing. Learn through writing how to write. Excellent writers share ideas, choose excellent words, compose with style, and organize for clarity.

But first, they need a topic. Choose anything that interests you for your one hour writing homework (see below): rodeo, skateboards, horses, beading, insects, sports. Learn about it. Write about it. Write in details to show you care about it and know it. Include writing skills we learn in class.

Want some topic ideas? Go to World Wonders to discover something in the world that interests you: science, biographies, cartoons. Again: Learn about it. Write about it. Write in details to show you care about it and know it. Include writing skills we learn in class.

Ready! Set! Go!

We know these things: brainstorming; prewriting for topic ideas and strong verbs; drafting strong verb paragraphs; drafting introductions and conclusions.

Homework (Fifth Grade) :

Write for one hour during the week or over the weekend:

Spend one hour writing; you may choose one day to write, or write 15 minutes a day over four days. Turn in writing on Monday morning. Write clearly with strong verbs and nifty nouns. Write in paragraphs. Use what we are learning in class. You may complete this during the week during any time frame you choose (such as 1 hour at a time, or four fifteen minute sections). Just spend one hour writing during the week and turn your writing in on Monday during class time.

Turn in all your questions, notes, drafts. See the rubric for scoring.
